Bailey’s Upper Families, 

It’s hard to believe we have less than three months left of school! The time is flying by.

The next few months will be packed with exciting events, including our band, strings, and chorus concert, 3rd-grade strings performances, the musical, Fun Fitness Day, and all of our end-of-year celebrations.

Amidst all the fun, we will also be preparing for our end-of-year assessments, including iReady and SOLs. While these tests do not define our children or their intelligence, they are important measures of progress and areas for continued growth. We appreciate your support in ensuring your child attends school regularly, stays focused on learning, and puts forth their best effort each day.

Reminder: 3-Hour Early Release Day – April 21st

This is a reminder that Bailey’s Upper will have a three-hour early dismissal on Monday, April 21st at 12:25 p.m. to accommodate teacher training in the afternoon.

You will receive a message from Bailey’s Upper on Monday reminding you that your child is scheduled to either go home at 12:25 p.m. or stay due to childcare difficulties or BUAE practice.

Please contact the office by April 11th to update your child’s status.

Volunteers Needed- Family Science Night April 3rd

Family Science Night is quickly approaching! We are looking for volunteers that are a minimum of 16 years old and can stay for the entire duration of the event, including set-up and break-down, from 5:15 – 7:45 p.m. (No splitting shifts please!)

Justice High School Boys Volleyball Clinic

Justice High School boys' volleyball team is hosting a volleyball clinic for 3rd-5th grade students at Justice High School on April 1st, 2nd and 3rd from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. The clinic will focus on teaching fundamental volleyball skills in a supportive and engaging environment, led by their boys volleyball team members and staff.

🎤 Save the Date: Community Conversations with Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid

☀️ Save the Date for the FCPS Summer Extravaganza

Discover summer learning and activities available in Fairfax County! 

Attend the FCPS Summer Extravaganza on Saturday, May 10, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at Woodson High School and get a jump on summer learning. At this free event, participants can engage in educational and enrichment activities designed to inspire curiosity and growth. 

Activities will include student performances, story time, a moon bounce, and face painting. For more information, visit the Summer Extravaganza webpage.

⏰ Coming Soon: School Start Times Survey

Last year, FCPS held community forums and surveyed middle school families regarding middle school start times. Now, we would like to hear from all staff and families on the possibility of adjusting school start times across the division. The goal remains to begin middle school at 8 a.m. or later at the start of the 2026-27 school year.

On April 1, a survey link will be sent by email to staff, parents/caregivers, and students in grades 5-12. The confidential survey will be open for two weeks and will be available in multiple languages.

On Monday, March 24, you will receive an email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and provides an opportunity for you to share anonymous feedback on key aspects of our school, including:

Conflict Resolution Workshop

We invite our Bailey's families to a Conflict Resolution Workshop on Thursday, March 27th, at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom to explore Kelso’s Choices, a simple strategy to help children manage conflicts. We will learn to:

Bailey’s Upper Families, 

This week, the School Board honored the Bailey’s Upper community with a proclamation celebrating our 10-year anniversary! It was wonderful to welcome Ms. Lemmon, our founding principal, and reflect on the incredible achievements of the past decade.

On April 4th, we will be hosting a special event to commemorate this milestone! While we won’t be able to open the event to the public, we will be live-streaming it so everyone can enjoy the amazing performances and speeches. Stay tuned for more details!

Our first week of the March Kindness Challenge is off to a strong start! Nearly every class has earned their special Blue PAW each day. We’re excited for another great week of students making strong decisions, showing respect, and solving problems.

Students taking the grade 5 Reading test will complete an integrated reading and writing (IRW) component. The IRW component of the SOL Reading test has one non-fiction reading passage followed by 4-6 of multiple-choice/technology-enhanced items and an “invitation to write” based on the passage.  A parent notification letter was sent home to 5th grade families in the Thursday folder sent on February 20th. The other 5th grade SOL’s, Reading, Math and Science, will be administered during the spring SOL window in May.

Evaluaciones actuales y futuras en Bailey's Upper

Lectura y escritura integradas (IRW) SOL - 5th Grado SOLAMENTE 

Los estudiantes que tomen el examen de lectura de quinto grado completarán un componente integrado de lectura y escritura (IRW). Bailey’s Upper Families, 

We’ve had an exciting week at Bailey’s Upper!

On Wednesday, some of our Student Leadership students had the opportunity to participate in a taste test hosted by FCPS Food and Nutrition Services. They provided feedback on potential new menu items and really enjoyed the experience! The Nutri-Grain bars were a big hit—hopefully, we’ll see some new additions soon!

On Thursday, we were honored to welcome all the Region 2 Principals to our school. They observed the outstanding instruction our teachers provide every day, and we couldn’t be prouder of our staff. It was a privilege to showcase the incredible work our teachers do, the enthusiasm of our students, and the wonderful school community we’ve built together.

Also on Thursday, we sent a Talking Points message with links to videos explaining your child’s Mid-Year iReady test results. If you haven’t had a chance yet, please take a moment to review the video. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out directly to your child’s teacher.

Summer Learning and Camps

🚀 Prepare for a Summer of Learning and Fun

Registration will be available soon for summer camps offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students. Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA) camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools. Registration begins for these programs on Monday, March 10, and ends Friday, June 6.

Tech Adventure Camp (TAC) is a week-long exploratory camp designed to allow current K-5 students to explore activities in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), culinary arts, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. Watch this video about CTE camps.

E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for students in grades 2-5 who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Students take part in four daily classes related to dance, music, theater, and visual art. They work with FCPS fine arts teachers who create fun and engaging classes.

Familias superiores de Bailey, 

¡Hemos tenido una semana emocionante en Bailey 's Upper!

El miércoles, algunos de nuestros estudiantes de Liderazgo Estudiantil tuvieron la oportunidad de participar en una prueba de sabor organizada por Servicios de Alimentación y Nutrición de FCPS. ¡Proporcionaron comentarios sobre posibles nuevos elementos del menú y realmente disfrutaron la experiencia! Las barras Nutri-Grain fueron un gran éxito; ¡con suerte, pronto veremos algunas nuevas incorporaciones!

El jueves tuvimos el honor de darles la bienvenida a nuestra escuela a todos los directores de la Región 2. Observaron la excelente instrucción que nuestros maestros brindan todos los días y no podríamos estar más orgullosos de nuestro personal. Fue un privilegio mostrar el increíble trabajo que hacen nuestros maestros, el entusiasmo de nuestros estudiantes y la maravillosa comunidad escolar que hemos construido juntos.

También el jueves enviamos un Puntos de conversación mensaje con enlaces a videos que explican los resultados de la prueba iReady de mitad de año de su hijo. Thank you to everyone who attended our Parent Coffee. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, explore our school’s literacy instruction, visit classrooms, and review individual student data together. We appreciate your engagement and thoughtful questions.

Ramadan at Bailey’s Upper

As we approach the holy month of Ramadan, we want to extend our best wishes to all who will be observing this special time of reflection, prayer, and fasting. We recognize that this is an important period for many of our students and families, and we want to ensure that we are providing the appropriate support.

If your child will be fasting Ramadan and would like to participate in prayer during the school day, please let us know so that we can make the necessary accommodations. Please complete this brief form so that we can document your child’s participation and create a plan to support them. We are happy to provide a quiet space for students who wish to pray and will do our best to support their needs throughout the month.

This is a reminder that Bailey’s Upper will have a three-hour early dismissal on Monday, March 10th at 12:25 p.m. to accommodate teacher training in the afternoon.

You will receive a message from Bailey’s Upper on Monday reminding you that your child is scheduled to either go home at 12:25 p.m. or stay due to childcare difficulties or BUAE practice.

WIDA Assessments

• Speaking Assessment Dates - February 24th- March 14th

Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW) SOL - 5th Grade ONLY - Students taking the grade 5 Reading test will complete an integrated reading and writing (IRW) component. The IRW component of the SOL Reading test has one non-fiction reading passage followed by 4-6 of multiple-choice/technology-enhanced items and an “invitation to write” based on the passage.  A parent notification letter was sent home to 5th grade families in  the Thursday folder sent on February 20th. The other 5th grade SOL’s, Reading, Math and Science, will be administered during the spring SOL window in May.

• IRW SOL Test date - Wednesday, March 19th

Justice Pyramid Art Show

The Justice Pyramid Art show will be on display from March 24-March 27, 2025 and the reception will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2025 from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM.

Move ‘Til You Drop

• We are excited to share that our annual dance event called Move 'Til You Drop (MTYD) is back! All Bailey’s Upper students in grades 3-5* are invited to attend. *Middle school students who attended MTYD in previous years are invited to attend as well. Participation is optional. Mrs. Sorto also posted this information on Schoology.
• INFORMATION: MTYD will be on Saturday, April 5th from 8am-1pm at Bailey’s Upper Elementary School. Students will learn various styles of dance including Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Musical Theater (students will get to take ALL three styles of dance). MTYD is FREE to participate and there is also FREE bus transportation provided (see below).
• TRANSPORTATION: Buses are provided--all students must ride the bus. Students must be dropped off at 8:00am at Bailey’s Primary and picked up at 1:00pm at Bailey’s Primary by an adult on their Emergency Care Card. LOTTERY SYSTEM: Please note that students will be selected to attend this Dance workshop through a random lottery system. There are 120 spots available.
• After 120 spots are filled, additional students will be put on the waitlist. Your child will receive an email to their @fcpsschools.net email from Mrs. Sorto on Friday, March 7th, 2025.
• WHEN IS THIS FORM DUE? Please complete this Google form* by no later than Friday, February 28th, 2025.

Varsity Tutors Provides On-Demand Support at No Cost

FCPS is partnering with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors’ services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. Summer Learning and Camps

🚀 Prepare for a Summer of Learning and Fun

Registration will be available soon for summer camps offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students. Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts (IFTA) camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools. Registration begins for these programs on Monday, March 10, and ends Friday, June 6.

Tech Adventure Camp (TAC) is a week-long exploratory camp designed to allow current K-5 students to explore activities in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), culinary arts, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. Watch this video about CTE camps.

E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for students in grades 2-5 who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Students take part in four daily classes related to dance, music, theater, and visual art. They work with FCPS fine arts teachers who create fun and engaging classes.

2025 Family Summit - Beyond Labels: Nurturing a Culture of Belonging!

Families, educators, and community members are invited to the 2025 FCPS Family Summit: Beyond Labels: Nurturing a Culture of Belonging. Fairfax County Public Schools will be hosting the free, in-person event in collaboration with valued community partners. The summit will be held Saturday, March 15, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at South Lakes High School.

This event will feature: 

• Opening Session: Julie Causton and Kristie Pretti-Frontczak — best-selling authors, motivational speakers, and advocates for inclusion — will share practical tools and evidence-based strategies to empower and assist all families, with a special emphasis on parents of students with individual education programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans.
• Breakout Sessions: Learn more about special education and global topics that benefit all families.

• Student Showcase: FCPS students will share their efforts in fostering inclusivity through posters, essays, videos, songs, art, and other mediums.
• Exhibitor Hall: Discover valuable resources and services in the community to support families.
• Networking Opportunities: Connect with other families, staff, and community partners.

Childcare will be provided. Special education staff will be available to care for children with high support needs. You may sign up for childcare during the registration process.

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28Thanks to a new program from the Virginia Department of Education, students who are fasting during the school day between February 28 and March 28 can now take school meal kits home at the end of the day.Families will need to fill out a weekly Fasting Meals Request Form for their child or children to receive school meal kits. A separate form must be filled out for each week and each student.To receive meal kits for Friday, February 28, and the week of March 3, please submit the first request form by Monday, February 24. Cumbre Familiar 2025 - Más allá de las etiquetas: ¡Fomentando una cultura de pertenencia!

Las familias, los educadores y los miembros de la comunidad están invitados a la Cumbre familiar de FCPS 2025: Más allá de las etiquetas: fomentando una cultura de pertenencia. Las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Fairfax organizaron el evento gratuito y en persona en colaboración con valiosos socios comunitarios. La cumbre se llevará a cabo el sábado 15 de marzo de 8:30 a. m. a 3:30 p. m. en Escuela secundaria de los lagos del sur.

Este evento contará con:

WIDA Assessments

• Speaking Assessment Dates - February 24th- March 14th

Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW) SOL - 5th Grade ONLY - Students taking the grade 5 Reading test will complete an integrated reading and writing (IRW) component. The IRW component of the SOL Reading test has one non-fiction reading passage followed by 4-6 of multiple-choice/technology-enhanced items and an “invitation to write” based on the passage.  A parent notification letter was sent home to 5th grade families in this week’s Thursday folder. The other 5th grade SOL’s, Reading, Math and Science, will be administered during the spring SOL window in May.

• IRW SOL Test date - Wednesday, March 19th

February Monthly AAP Newsletter

The February edition of the FCPS AAP newsletter focuses on the district’s commitment to talent development. As a system, we are dedicated to identifying and nurturing students' strengths by ensuring equitable access to advanced academic opportunities for all students and empowering them to reach their full potential. At Bailey’s Upper we focus on talent development by teaching all students critical and creative thinking skills so students can communicate their ideas better.

Move ‘Til You Drop

• We are excited to share that our annual dance event called Move 'Til You Drop (MTYD) is back! All Bailey’s Upper students in grades 3-5* are invited to attend. *Middle school students who attended MTYD in previous years are invited to attend as well. Participation is optional. Mrs. Sorto also posted this information on Schoology.
• INFORMATION: MTYD will be on Saturday, April 5th from 8am-1pm at Bailey’s Upper Elementary School. Students will learn various styles of dance including Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Musical Theater (students will get to take ALL three styles of dance). MTYD is FREE to participate and there is also FREE bus transportation provided (see below).
• TRANSPORTATION: Buses are provided--all students must ride the bus. Students must be dropped off at 8:00am at Bailey’s Primary and picked up at 1:00pm at Bailey’s Primary by an adult on their Emergency Care Card. LOTTERY SYSTEM: Please note that students will be selected to attend this Dance workshop through a random lottery system. There are 120 spots available.
• After 120 spots are filled, additional students will be put on the waitlist. Your child will receive an email to their @fcpsschools.net email from Mrs. Sorto on Friday, March 7th, 2025.
• WHEN IS THIS FORM DUE? Please complete this Google form* by no later than Friday, February 28th, 2025.

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28Thanks to a new program from the Virginia Department of Education, students who are fasting during the school day between February 28 and March 28 can now take school meal kits home at the end of the day.Families will need to fill out a weekly Fasting Meals Request Form for their child or children to receive school meal kits. A separate form must be filled out for each week and each student.To receive meal kits for Friday, February 28, and the week of March 3, please submit the first request form by Monday, February 24. February is Heart Health Month!

During this month’s Grade-Level Town Halls, our students explored the importance of cardiovascular health. They learned about different ways to take care of their bodies and even learned about hand-only CPR. As we continue through February, we’ll be focusing on additional ways to keep our hearts healthy.

We invite you to join us in celebrating heart health in two ways:

1️⃣ Support the Bailey’s Upper Challenge – Help us reach our goal of $1,200 for the American Heart Association! Once we hit this milestone, our school will receive new equipment for our Physical Education (PE) program. Special Link for Bailey’s Upper Donations

WIDA Assessments

All students identified as multilingual learners (MLs) are assessed annually to monitor their progress and proficiency in English as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs for this purpose. 

The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs is aligned with the WIDA English Language Development standards and assesses English in the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

TJHSST Techstravaganza 2025

Techstravaganza is a free, public, hands-on STEM activity fair for elementary and middle school students in Northern Virginia. In previous years, Thomas Jefferson High School hosted more than 4,500 students and 70 labs presenting STEM activities. Their exhibitors range from TJHSST clubs and their own TWIST volunteers to organizations like NASA SCaN, Art of Problem Solving, George Mason University, American Society of Naval Engineers, and the National Air and Space Museum.

This year, they will be holding the 21st annual Techstravaganza on Saturday, May 17, 2024 from 10 AM to 4 PM at TJHSST.

Admission is free, food will be for sale, and they hope to see you there!

Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Bailey’s Upper ES

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 24. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 24, and Friday, March 7. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. A paper opt-out form will be sent home with students. Parent Opt-Out Window: February 3 – 14.

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

County Message on Flu

🤧 Protect Yourself and Your Community From the Flu

Fairfax County is experiencing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. The Fairfax County Health Department reports that visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings. Read a letter from the health department. 

The health department suggests taking the following steps to reduce the spread of flu and other germs:    

• Cover coughs and sneezes. If you must be around others while ill, wearing a mask can help reduce spread.
• Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available (with supervision for younger children).
• Clean frequently touched surfaces.

According to the health department, to help prevent or reduce the spread of illness it is important for individuals who are sick to stay home and away from others until symptoms improve and until they have been free of fever for at least 24 hours. SEL Screener

Learn More About How Your Child Feels at School

The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-12 in March. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop the skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who do not have a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Evaluaciones WIDA

TJHSST Techstravaganza 2025

Tech Stravaganza es una feria de actividades STEM, pública y gratuita para estudiantes de primaria y secundaria en el norte de Virginia. En años anteriores, la escuela secundaria Thomas Jefferson recibió a más de 4500 estudiantes y 70 laboratorios que presentaban actividades STEM. Can you believe it? February 12th marks our 100th day of school! 🎉 Our students have grown in 100 ways, shared 100 smiles, and filled our hearts with 100 reasons to be proud.

Reminder: 3-Hour Early Release Day – Feb 10th

This is a reminder that Bailey’s Upper will have a three-hour early dismissal on Monday, February 10th at 12:25 p.m. to accommodate teacher training in the afternoon.

You will receive a message from Bailey’s Upper on Monday reminding you that your child is scheduled to either go home at 12:25 p.m. or stay due to childcare difficulties or BUAE practice.

Current and Upcoming Assessment at Bailey's Upper

All students identified as multilingual learners (MLs) are assessed annually to monitor their progress and proficiency in English as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs for this purpose. 

The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs is aligned with the WIDA English Language Development standards and assesses English in the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Kids Heart Challenge

We are excited to share that our school is participating in the Kids Heart Challenge (KHC) this year! The event will kick-off at the Town Hall on Monday, February 10th. We will have a special guest from the American Heart Association (AHA) coming to visit our school and share with students how to perform hands-only CPR. In specials this month (PE and Dance), students will learn how to perform hands-only CPR.

In this weeks’ Thursday folders, we sent home a letter explaining the KHC and other exciting information! On the letter, there is a QR code to collect donations for the AHA (our school will receive a gift certificate for US Games based on the total raised). Donations are optional. We will also have a Wellness Spirit Week at the end of this month (more information coming soon). For questions, please contact Mrs. Sorto [email protected] 

Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Bailey’s Upper ES

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 24. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 24, and Friday, March 7. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. A paper opt-out form will be sent home with students. Parent Opt-Out Window: February 3 – 14.

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

Immunizations

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Monday, May 19, students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization status and submit updated immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE. 

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources. Be wise and immunize!

Black History Month Celebration – Date Change

Black History Month Kick-Off Celebration (Note: Date Change)

FCPS’ Chief Equity Office invites the community to an Inaugural Black History Month Kickoff Celebration on Wednesday, February 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Carter G. Woodson High School.   

The event begins with a light reception followed by a formal program, From the Threads of Our Past to the Fabric of Our Future. The program will honor the enduring contributions of Black history and culture while envisioning a future rooted in equity and excellence. It will include inspiring performances, personal stories, reflections, and opportunities to connect and celebrate. The event is open to the entire community.

En la carta, hay un código QR para recolectar donaciones para la AHA (nuestra escuela recibirá un certificado de regalo para los Juegos de EE. UU. según el total recaudado). Bailey’s Upper Families, 

Progress reports will be sent home on Thursday, February 6, in your child’s Thursday folder. As a reminder, our grading system is standards-based and cumulative throughout the school year. Your child may be meeting expectations while still receiving some 1s or 2s in certain academic areas. What matters most is consistent progress over time, with the goal of achieving mastery by the end of the year.

We encourage all students to aim for 3s and 4s in effort and citizenship. We expect that they do their best each day and treat everyone—including themselves—with kindness and respect.

If you have any questions about your child’s scores, please contact their teacher or reach out to an administrator. We’d be happy to schedule a meeting to discuss their progress.

Reading Opens the World Event

The Fairfax County Federation of Teachers (FCFT) will be holding a Reading Opens the World event at the Lorton Community Center on Saturday, February 8.  At this event, FCFT will be giving away over 30,000 books to the Fairfax Community, with up to 10 books for each student and 50 books for each educator to add to their classroom library.

Evento La lectura abre el mundo

El Fairfax Federación de Maestros del Condado (FCFT) llevará a cabo un evento Reading Opens the World en el Centro Comunitario de Lorton el sábado 8 de febrero. En este evento, FCFT regalará más de 30,000 libros a la comunidad de Fairfax, con hasta 10 libros para cada estudiante y 50 libros para que cada educador lo agregue a la biblioteca de su salón de clases.

Congratulations to Principal Dowling for being named Region 2’s Outstanding New Principal. We are so proud of Ms. Dowling! Ms. Dowling will move on to the final round and compete against the Outstanding New Principals from the other FCPS regions. School Safety Drills

At Bailey’s Upper ES, our number one responsibility is to always ensure the safety of our students and staff. We continually work with county leaders to ensure coordinated responses to potential safety concerns, and we practice emergency drills on a regular basis throughout the school year. We will hold fire drills, Lockdown Drills, Bus Evacuation and Tornado drills periodically throughout the year.  

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We plan to have our second lockdown drill of the school year during the week of January 27th at Bailey’s Upper ES.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child. Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help in keeping our school safe. 

During a lockdown drill:

1. All students stay in place with a teacher or staff member.
2. Students and teachers remain in locked classrooms, unobservable from outside (lights-off, window blinds closed, door windows obscured with paper) and outside potential lines of fire.)
3. Students and staff members disregard fire alarms.
4. No one enters or exits the school, except public safety personnel.
5. Persons in trailers remain in locked trailers.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

⚠️ Know Our Security Terms

FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned. 

If students, staff, or community members have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.  

Reminder: 3-Hour Early Release Day – Feb 10th

This is a reminder that Bailey’s Upper will have a three-hour early dismissal on Monday, February 10th at 12:25 p.m. to accommodate teacher training in the afternoon.

You will receive a message from Bailey’s Upper on Monday reminding you that your child is scheduled to either go home at 12:25 p.m. or stay due to childcare difficulties or BUAE practice.

Please contact the office by February 7th to update your child’s status.

WIDA Assessments Begin Next Week

All students identified as multilingual learners (MLs) are assessed annually to monitor their progress and proficiency in English as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs for this purpose. 

The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs is aligned with the WIDA English Language Development standards and assesses English in the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

• 5th Grade – Thursday, January 30th

Glasgow Rising 6th Grade Night

Current 5th Grade Families:

You are invited to attend Glasgow’s Rising 6th Grade Middle School Transition Night on Thursday, January 30th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. All students/children in attendance must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.

It is a wonderful opportunity:

• Meet Ms. Lisa Barrow, new GMS Principal
• Learn about various programming options such as Multilingual Learner, Special Education supports, Math options, AVID, etc.
• Attend Student panel where current GMS students will be available to answer questions you or your child may have.

Loving Solutions Parenting Course

VA SOL Summary

📈 Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year. 

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. We will distribute them to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE. 

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our staff members are committed to working with families to help every student reach their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS.

En Bailey 's Upper ES, nuestra responsabilidad número uno es garantizar siempre la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y personal. Trabajamos continuamente con los líderes del condado para garantizar respuestas coordinadas a posibles problemas de seguridad y practicamos simulacros de emergencia de forma regular durante todo el año escolar. 📈 Resumen de evaluación de estudiantes de Virginia para familias

Bailey’s Upper Families, 

This week, the temperatures have been too cold for outdoor recess, and it looks like next week will be similar. Please note that we only cancel outdoor recess if the "feels-like" temperature drops below 32 degrees. Even on very cold days, we may take students outside for brief periods. Fresh air, movement, and sunshine are incredibly beneficial in helping our students recharge and prepare for learning.

It’s important that your child comes to school dressed appropriately for the weather. If your child needs a jacket, gloves, or a hat, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their teacher or me directly so we can ensure they have what they need.

Bailey’s Upper Literacy Workshop

All Bailey’s Upper parents are invited to attend our Literacy Workshop on Monday, Feb. 24th 9:15 a.m-10:30 a.m, it will be held in-person at Upper’s Cafeteria. We will be covering the items listed below:

• Learn about Benchmark Advance and the integration of social studies, science, and literary topics.
• Learn about UPPER’s Walk to Read program!
• Receive school-wide data
• Visit our incredible classrooms!

Glasgow Rising 6th Grade Night

Current 5th Grade Families:

You are invited to attend Glasgow’s Rising 6th Grade Middle School Transition Night on Thursday, January 30th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. All students/children in attendance must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.

It is a wonderful opportunity:

• Meet Ms. Lisa Barrow, new GMS Principal
• Learn about various programming options such as Multilingual Learner, Special Education supports, Math options, AVID, etc.
• Attend Student panel where current GMS students will be available to answer questions you or your child may have. 
• Attend a Family Engagement Session that will be focused on how families can support their child’s success at Glasgow. 

Bus transportation is available for families who need it.  Buses will pick up and drop off at the following locations:

• Baileys Elementary 6111 Knollwood Dr, Bailey's Crossroads, VA 22041
• Skyline 5599 Seminary Rd, Falls Church, VA 22041
• Willston Community Center 6131 Willston Dr, Falls Church, VA 22044

Busses will pick up for the event at 5:45 pm and will leave Glasgow at 8:00 pm.

Current and Upcoming Assessment at Bailey's Upper iReady Reading and Math in January 2025

The Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) require schools to provide reading and mathematics screening tests for all students in grades 3-6. These assessments also fulfill a requirement for reading and mathematics growth assessments under the Virginia Assessment Program (VAP). Test results help families and teachers know how to support each student’s learning and development.

• Taken the week of January 13-17th for all grade levels

• 3rd Grade - January 21st 
• 4th Grade - January 22nd
• 5th Grade - January 23rd

Loving Solutions Parenting Course

We are thrilled to invite you to Loving Solutions, a free 10-week parenting course designed specifically for Bailey’s parents with children aged 5 to 10 years old. This empowering program offers a supportive environment where parents can connect, share experiences, and gain practical strategies to address their child’s behavioral challenges at home and how to strengthen the relationship between child and parent.

• A built-in parent support group to provide emotional encouragement.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Winter weather is here! As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. We monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education.

Familias superiores de Bailey, 

Esta semana, las temperaturas han sido demasiado frías para el recreo al aire libre y parece que la próxima semana será similar. Tenga en cuenta que solo cancelamos el recreo al aire libre si la temperatura "sensible" cae por debajo de los 32 grados. Incluso en días muy fríos, podemos sacar a los estudiantes afuera por períodos breves. El aire fresco, el movimiento y el sol son increíblemente beneficiosos para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a recargarse y prepararse para el aprendizaje.

Glasgow Rising 6th noche de grado

Familias de Estudiantes de 5to Grado:

Están invitados a asistir a la Noche de Transición a la Escuela Intermedia para los futuros estudiantes de 6to Grado de Glasgow el jueves, 30 de enero, de 6:00pm- 8:00pm. Todos los estudiantes/niños que asistan deben estar acompañados y supervisados por un adulto.

Es una excelente oportunidad para:

• Conocer a la Sra. Lisa Barrow, la nueva directora de Glasgow Middle School.
• Aprender sobre varias opciones de programas, como apoyo para estudiantes multilingües, educación especial, opciones de matemáticas, AVID, y más.

Evaluaciones actuales y futuras en Bailey's Upper iReady Lectura y Matemáticas en enero de 2025

La Ley de Alfabetización de Virginia (VLA) y los Sistemas de Apoyo de Múltiples Niveles (MTSS) de las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Fairfax (FCPS) exigen que las escuelas proporcionen pruebas de detección de lectura y matemáticas para todos los estudiantes en los grados 3 a 6.
