Bailey’s Upper Families, 

We hope you are enjoying the cool fall weather! I was able to take my children down to Charlottesville this past weekend for a hike and to see the leaves change colors. It was beautiful and it gave me time to reflect on the past 6 months here at Bailey’s Upper!! 

 

 

I continue to wake up each morning excited to come to school and see your children. They are the happiest, hardest working, and most loving students I have ever worked with. While I was hiking I was working on the Top Ten Things that Make Bailey’s Upper Special and this is what I came up with.

If you can’t make it on Thursday, remember you can join your child for lunch anytime.

Student Experience Survey

Our school has been selected to participate in a pilot program for the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

A limited number of classes in grades 3-6 will be selected to participate. However, all students in participating grades, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email. We will administer the survey in selected classes during the school day between Monday, December 2, and Friday, December 13. Any student may take the survey at home, if preferred. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. 

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

Join us for the UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD's REPORT CARD workshop – a valuable session for parents eager to support their child’s academic journey. This workshop will help you understand how report cards reflect your child's learning progress, what the different marks mean, and how to use this information.

Boundary Review Community Meeting

 

Community meetings regarding FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review will take place in each of the division's six regions. You are encouraged to attend the meeting in our region, which will take place on Monday, November 18, 6:30-8 p.m., at Glasgow Middle School Cafeteria.

Justice Girls Lacrosse Fall Clinic

Justice Girls Lacrosse is hosting a Fall Clinic, which is a fantastic opportunity for both beginner and experienced players. Targeting girls in 5th – 8th grade in the Justice Pyramid, this clinic will feature our dedicated coaching staff and Varsity players, all focused on growing the sport of lacrosse in our community. Over three days, players will learn essential passing and catching fundamentals, offensive and defensive strategies, and wrap up each session with small-sided competitive scrimmages. The cost is $50 and includes a t-shirt! Lacrosse is a growing sport in the U.S. and will be featured in the 2028 Summer Olympics! We hope to continue expanding the sport in our community and grow our Justice GLAX program. We finished our season as National District Champions and advanced to the Occoquan Region Semi-finals for the second year in a row! We also celebrated Coach of the Year and had the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in the National District. To say we are proud is an understatement! Our goal is to continue this success and make history each year, and we want you to be a part of it!

Impact Aid Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will provide paper forms in November. Please be sure to return them by Friday, November 17. 

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Familias superiores de Bailey, 

¡Esperamos que esté disfrutando del clima fresco del otoño! Pude llevar a mis hijos a Charlottesville el fin de semana pasado para hacer una caminata y ver las hojas cambiar de color. ¡Fue hermoso y me dio tiempo para reflexionar sobre los últimos 6 meses aquí en Bailey's Upper!

Próxima encuesta sobre la experiencia del estudiante

Nuestra escuela ha sido seleccionada para participar en un programa piloto para la Encuesta de Experiencia Estudiantil de FCPS. Esta encuesta recopila comentarios importantes de los estudiantes sobre sus experiencias escolares para ayudar a FCPS a realizar mejoras significativas.

Reunión Comunitaria de Revisión de Límites

Justice Clínica de caídas de lacrosse para niñas

Justice Girls Lacrosse está organizando una Clínica de Otoño, que es una oportunidad fantástica tanto para jugadores principiantes y jugadores con experiencia. Dirigida a niñas de 5º a 8º grado en Justice Pyramid, esta clínica contará con nuestro dedicado cuerpo técnico y jugadores universitarios, todos enfocados para crecer el deporte del lacrosse en nuestra comunidad. Durante tres días, los jugadores aprenderán los fundamentos esenciales de pases y recepciones, estrategias ofensivas y defensivas, y concluirán cada sesión con partidos competitivos en equipos reducidos. ¡El costo es de $50 e incluye una camiseta! ¡El lacrosse es un deporte en crecimiento en los EE. UU. y aparecerá en los Juegos Olímpicos de verano de 2028! Esperamos continuar expandiendo el deporte en nuestra comunidad y hacer crecer nuestro programa Justice GLAX. ¡Terminamos nuestra temporada como campeones del Distrito Nacional y avanzamos a las semifinales de la región de Occoquan por segundo año consecutivo! Bailey’s Upper Families, 

Our teachers and students have just completed the first quarter of the 24-25 school year! We are so proud of all the work they have done this year. We also appreciate the high-quality instruction our teachers have been delivering every day.  You will receive your child’s progress report next week. This report will provide insight into your child’s academic and social-emotional development.

As was shared at the PTA meeting, our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child at the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next week, it might look different. Hopefully, at this point, you have already had your parent/teacher conference but if you haven’t please reach out to your child’s teacher so that they can give you more information about the progress report and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. Veteran’s Day is a day for us to honor and express our deepest gratitude to all our veterans who have bravely served our country. As a reminder, Monday, November 11th is Veteran’s Day and schools are closed for staff and students.

Family Engagement Workshop

Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Familias superiores de Bailey, 

¡Nuestros maestros y estudiantes acaban de completar el primer trimestre del año escolar 24-25! Estamos muy orgullosos de todo el trabajo que han realizado este año. También apreciamos la instrucción de alta calidad que nuestros maestros han brindado todos los días.  Recibirá el informe de progreso de su hijo la próxima semana. Este informe proporcionará información sobre el desarrollo académico y socioemocional de su hijo.

Como se compartió en la reunión de la PTA, nuestros maestros han estado trabajando arduamente enseñando con el nuevo plan de estudios de Artes del Lenguaje, ¡y estamos emocionados de ayudar a todos nuestros estudiantes a convertirse en buenos lectores y escritores! Este año también tenemos nuevas evaluaciones, que es la forma en que verificamos si su estudiante necesita ayuda adicional con la lectura y la escritura, y nuevos Estándares de Aprendizaje (SOL).

Debido a estos cambios, ahora estamos enseñando todas las habilidades de artes del lenguaje que su hijo necesita saber (y comprobando si necesita ayuda adicional) durante todo el año escolar, en lugar de diferentes habilidades cada trimestre. Si bien estas habilidades serán nuevas para su hijo al comienzo del año, el objetivo es que su hijo se fortalezca en todas sus nuevas habilidades para fin de año.

Esto significa que cuando reciba el informe de progreso de su hijo la próxima semana, es posible que se vea diferente. Bailey’s Upper Families, 

We had a great time today with our Book Character Day! While I am typically more of a fiction reader, I do enjoy the occasional biography. This summer I read a few children’s biographies of Taylor Swift with my daughter and I enjoy dressing up as her today. Did you know that she became interested in musical theater at the age of 9!? As we are beginning rehearsals for our 5th grade musical, I am sure that we have the next big star here at Bailey’s Upper!!

In an effort to make sure everyone in our Bailey’s Upper community is aware of our School Improvement and Innovation goals this year, I wanted to share with you our areas of focus in literacy and mathematics. As you may know, our Superintendent Dr. Reid has outlined our strategic plan and part of the plan is working to get every 3rd-grade student reading on grade level. This year our goal is to increase the number of students in the ‘low-risk’ category in the reading screener. 

• Bailey’s Upper Literacy Goal: By June 2025, the percentage of students who are meeting the reading screener benchmark (i.e., at low risk) will increase by 5 percentage points from fall to spring. (74% to 79%)
• Bailey’s Upper Mathematics Goal: By June 2025, all students will make growth and the percentage of students who placed below grade-level will decrease by at least 25% as measured by the iReady Math assessment. (51% to 26%) 

Our Title 1 Family Compact is in draft form and we would love for you to give us feedback on what you would like to see happen at Bailey’s Upper this year and in the future. Please take a few minutes to review the compact HERE.

Justice Girls Lacrosse Fall Clinic

Justice Girls Lacrosse is hosting a Fall Clinic, which is a fantastic opportunity for both beginner and experienced players. Targeting girls in 5th – 8th grade in the Justice Pyramid, this clinic will feature our dedicated coaching staff and Varsity players, all focused on growing the sport of lacrosse in our community. Over three days, players will learn essential passing and catching fundamentals, offensive and defensive strategies, and wrap up each session with small-sided competitive scrimmages. The cost is $50 and includes a t-shirt! Lacrosse is a growing sport in the U.S. and will be featured in the 2028 Summer Olympics! We hope to continue expanding the sport in our community and grow our Justice GLAX program. We finished our season as National District Champions and advanced to the Occoquan Region Semi-finals for the second year in a row! We also celebrated Coach of the Year and had the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in the National District. To say we are proud is an understatement! Our goal is to continue this success and make history each year, and we want you to be a part of it!

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

Impact Aid Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will provide paper forms in November. Please be sure to return them by Friday, November 17. 

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Familias superiores de Bailey, 

¡Nos lo pasamos muy bien hoy con nuestro Día del Personaje del Libro! Si bien normalmente soy más un lector de ficción, disfruto de la biografía ocasional. Este verano leí algunas biografías infantiles de Taylor Swift con mi hija y hoy disfruto disfrazarme de ella. ¿¡Sabías que se interesó por el teatro musical a los 9 años!? En un esfuerzo por asegurarnos de que todos en nuestra comunidad de Bailey 's Upper estén conscientes de nuestras metas de mejora e innovación escolar este año, quería compartir con ustedes nuestras áreas de enfoque en alfabetización y matemáticas. Actualizaciones de las Calificaciones de Lenguaje para la Escuela Primaria

Nuestros maestros han estado trabajando duro enseñando con el nuevo currículo de Artes del Lenguaje, ¡y estamos emocionados de ayudar a todos nuestros estudiantes a convertirse en fuertes lectores y escritores! To submit a nomination for a Bailey’s Upper Outstanding Employee in one of the categories below, please complete the nomination through this Google form link. You may nominate one employee at our school or multiple employees (one individual may only nominate one employee per category.)

All that is required for a preliminary nomination is a paragraph about how this employee demonstrates exceptional work in one more of the criteria for that award category. Immunizations

Safeway Immunization Clinics for All FCPS Students 

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations at Frost Middle School for all FCPS students at no cost on: 

• Monday, October 28, 3-7 p.m.
• Tuesday, October 29, from 3 to 7 p.m

Elementary School Clinics

The Fairfax County Health Department will provide immunizations for FCPS elementary students on limited early release Mondays at their district offices. All school-required immunizations will be offered at no cost. Call 703-246-7100 to make your appointment.

Impact Aid Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will provide paper forms in November. Please be sure to return them by Friday, November 17. 

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Bailey’s Upper Families, 

Next week we will have our second 3-hour early release day on Monday, October 21st. This time is important planning time for our teachers to complete the state-mandated literacy training and collaborate as teams. At this point, you should have received two messages from me confirming if your child is staying for the full day or going home at 12:25 p.m. Students are allowed to stay if there is a childcare hardship due to the 3-hour early release or your child is in the 5th-grade musical. The children that remain in school will work on Lexia, iReady Math, and some quiet creative time. They will not be with their classroom teachers. 

In the morning on October 21st, all grade levels will meet for their October Town Hall. During the Town Hall, we will discuss how our words have power and the impact of hurtful words. We hope that all students walk away from our Town Hall with the understanding that we all have choices and our choices have consequences. To support families we have asked the PTA to share ways to talk to your child at home about the use of hate language. Please join us on October 23rd in the Bailey’s Primary cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. to learn more. 

Our amazing School counselors Ms. Thompson and Mr. Ryan will also review the Positivity Project Skill of Self-Control. If you would like to talk about self-control with your child at home, Positively Project has resources available at https://posproject.org/p2-for-families/3-5/self-control/. We hope that our children learn that it is okay to have feelings but that having self-control means that we do not let our feelings control us. 

As we head into fall, the weather will begin to be cooler and at times chilly, please be sure to send your child with layers of clothing. If your child needs a winter coat, please let us know.

Familias superiores de Bailey, 

La próxima semana tendremos nuestro segundo día de salida temprana de 3 horas el lunes 21 de octubre. Este es un momento importante de planificación para que nuestros maestros completen la capacitación de alfabetización exigida por el estado y colaboren como equipos. En este punto, debería haber recibido dos mensajes míos confirmando si su hijo se quedará todo el día o regresará a casa a las 12:25 p.m. A los estudiantes se les permite quedarse si hay dificultades para el cuidado de los niños debido a la salida anticipada de 3 horas o si su hijo está en el musical de quinto grado. Bailey’s Upper Families, 

There are so many exciting things happening here at Bailey’s Upper:

• Our 5th graders have started musical and chorus practices.
• Girls on the Run is gearing up for their 5K 
• Our Science Olympiad students are preparing for their competition 
• Our Student Council is working to finalize who will be participating
• We have a Town Hall on Monday, October 23rd with all grade levels 
• Our blacktop was painted with a basketball court and a soccer pitch
• Every class has earned at least 2 extra recesses

And so much more!!! 

We wanted to keep everyone updated and share that we are currently without a strings teacher. The FCPS Fine Arts Department is supporting us in hiring a new strings teacher and has provided us with resources for music instruction in the absence of a teacher. We hope to have someone in place within the next 2 weeks. Once we have more information - we will share with you!

Current and Upcoming Assessment at Bailey's Upper SEL Screener - Social and Emotional Learning Screening

FCPS is committed to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning. FCPS approved a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener that students use to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success. All students in grades 3-12 have the opportunity to participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring.

• Administered in all Grades 3-5, Tuesday, October 15th.

National School Lunch Week

Celebrating the Power of School Lunches

Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers. 

This School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. Also, new menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Están sucediendo muchas cosas interesantes aquí en Bailey's Upper:

• Nuestros alumnos de 5to grado han iniciado prácticas musicales y de coro.
• Girls on the Run se está preparando para su carrera de 5 km 
• Nuestros estudiantes de la Olimpiada de Ciencias se están preparando para su competencia. 
• Nuestro Consejo Estudiantil está trabajando para finalizar quiénes participarán.

Queríamos mantener a todos actualizados y compartir que actualmente estamos sin un maestro de cuerdas. El Departamento de Bellas Artes de FCPS nos está apoyando en la contratación de un nuevo maestro de cuerdas y nos ha proporcionado recursos para la instrucción musical en ausencia de un maestro. FCPS is committed to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning. FCPS approved a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener that students use to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success. All students in grades 3-12 have the opportunity to participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring.

• Administered in all Grades 3-5, Tuesday, October 15th.

Cognitive Abilities Test - CogAT

The purpose of the CogAT is to provide information about students’ developed abilities in verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning. The types of tasks included in the test are based on content that children are likely to have experienced in school.

• Administered to students in grade 3-5 who do not yet have an abilities test on file, the week of Oct. 21st
  • A letter was sent home with this group of students on Wednesday, Oct. 2nd.

Semana Nacional del Almuerzo Escolar

Celebrando el poder de los almuerzos escolares

Múltiples estudios demuestran que los almuerzos escolares son importantes para apoyar la salud general de los estudiantes al mejorar sus dietas y combatir la inseguridad alimentaria. Los estudiantes que comen almuerzos escolares consumen más frutas, vegetales, y fibra que sus compañeros. 

Esta Semana de Almuerzo Escolar, los Servicios de Alimentos y Nutrición (FNS) de FCPS les recuerda a las familias que están dedicados a proveer comidas sabrosas, saludables, sostenibles y enfocadas en los estudiantes. Nuevos artículos de menú han sido lanzados este año basado en la retroalimentación de los estudiantes.

Bailey’s Upper Families, 

We are gearing up to finish the first quarter of the 24-25 school year. It feels like the weeks are flying by! 

Our top priority here at Bailey’s Upper is creating a strong home-to-school connection. The research is clear, when the school and the family collaborate children have better attendance, higher achievement, and more positive attitudes toward school. 

One of the best ways to do this is for each family to have a parent/teacher conference. These can be over the phone, in-person, or virtual. Your child’s teacher should be or has already reached out to schedule a conference with you. These meetings allow us to work together to understand your child’s progress, identify areas for growth, and celebrate achievements. 

A few questions you can ask during the conference are: 

• How is my child doing academically, socially, and emotionally?
• What strengths have you noticed and how can we build on them?
• Are there any areas of concern or challenges we should address as a team?
• How can we best support learning at home?

SCA/PBA Student Committee 24-25

Mrs. Sorto, leader of the SCA/PBA (Positive Behavior Approach) Committee, is looking for 2 student representatives per classroom to join the SCA/PBA Student Committee by a random lottery drawing. The selected students will be announced on BNN on Friday, October 18th and will receive an email as well. To enter into the lottery drawing, students are invited to fill out this Google Form. Participation is optional.

The SCA/PBA Student Committee will meet with Mrs. Sorto once a month (on Day 1--full calendar will be shared on Schoology) from 8:50 a.m.-9:20 a.m.. Our first meeting will be on Thursday, October 23rd from 8:50 a.m.-9:20 a.m. in Mrs. Sorto's room (room 406). Please see the form for the expectations of being on the committee.

Immunizations

Safeway Immunization Clinics for All FCPS Students 

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations at Frost Middle School for all FCPS students at no cost on: 

• Tuesday, October 8, 3-7 p.m.
• Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
• Monday, October 28, 3-7 p.m.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 to provide consent. Learn more about immunization resources and registering in other languages for the Safeway clinic.

Elementary School Clinics

The Fairfax County Health Department will provide immunizations for FCPS elementary students on limited early release Mondays at their district offices. All school-required immunizations will be offered at no cost. Call 703-246-7100 to make your appointment.

Nos estamos preparando para terminar el primer trimestre del año escolar 24-25. ¡Parece que las semanas pasan volando!

La revisión pública de los materiales educativos bajo consideración, que es parte del proceso de selección de nuevos recursos, está en marcha. Bailey’s Upper Families, 

What another great week here at Bailey’s Upper! We have started to dig into our new literacy resources by beginning Unit 1 this week. This week will last 15 days and over the next 15 days your children will be learning the following:  

Third grade will be reading about animal adaptations and practicing the skills of comparing and contrasting, identifying and using verbs, and long vowel sounds. An activity you could do with your child at home would be for them to compare and contrast two different animals. You could ask questions like “how are the animals the same?” and “how are these animals different?”

If your child is in fourth grade they will be “Observing Nature” by reading different fiction stories, informational texts, essays, or poems, and identifying how writers use nature as the backdrop of their stories. They will be asking themselves questions like “How do we respond to nature?” and “How do animals and plants interact?’ Try asking your child what animals live a solitary life or protect their territory. 

Our fifth graders will be reading and comparing selections about plants, how they function, and how humans cultivate food crops and develop natural resources. They will be reading different genres such as informational texts, opinion essays, folktales, and editorials. You can support them at home by asking questions such as “if we had a surplus of corn what could we do with it?” or “if we could grow any vegetable in our garden what should we grow?”

We are very excited about our new literacy resources and hope that you are too!

IReady- All iReady Universal Screener testing for Reading and Math has been completed for the fall window.

🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

Familias superiores de Bailey, 

¡Qué otra gran semana aquí en Bailey's Upper! Hemos comenzado a profundizar en nuestros nuevos recursos de alfabetización al comenzar la Unidad 1 esta semana. Esta semana durará 15 días y durante los próximos 15 días sus hijos aprenderán lo siguiente:  

El tercer grado leerá sobre las adaptaciones de los animales y practicará las habilidades de comparar y contrastar, identificar y usar verbos y sonidos de vocales largas. Una actividad que podría hacer con su hijo en casa sería comparar y contrastar dos animales diferentes. Podrías hacer preguntas como “¿En qué se parecen los animales?” y "¿en qué se diferencian estos animales?"

Si su hijo está en cuarto grado, “Observará la naturaleza” leyendo diferentes historias de ficción, textos informativos, ensayos o poemas, e identificando cómo los escritores usan la naturaleza como telón de fondo de sus historias. Se harán preguntas como "¿Cómo respondemos a la naturaleza?" y “¿Cómo interactúan los animales y las plantas?” Intente preguntarle a su hijo qué animales viven una vida solitaria o protegen su territorio. 

Nuestros alumnos de quinto grado leerán y compararán selecciones sobre plantas, cómo funcionan y cómo los humanos cultivan alimentos y desarrollan recursos naturales. Leerán diferentes géneros como textos informativos, ensayos de opinión, cuentos populares y editoriales. Puedes apoyarlos en casa haciéndoles preguntas como “si tuviéramos un excedente de maíz, ¿qué podríamos hacer con él?” o “si pudiéramos cultivar cualquier vegetal en nuestro jardín, ¿qué deberíamos cultivar?”

🗓️ Consejo para la asistencia: Programar viajes o eventos familiares

La buena asistencia es una habilidad importante para la vida que ayudará a los estudiantes a tener éxito en la escuela y más allá.

This week we held our first Grade Level Town Hall Meeting. The administration and the counseling team brought each grade level together in the gym. During these meetings, we reviewed the following things: 

• School-wide Expectations
• Good and Bad Consequences
• Other People Matter
• Positivity Project Kids of the Month!

In August, students learned what it means to have an “Other People Matter” mindset: 

1. Identifying and appreciating the good in others
2. Knowing that my words and actions affect others
3. Supporting them when they struggle
4. Being present and giving others my attention 
5. Cheering their successes

The students who were picked as our Positivity Project Student of the Month were students who demonstrated that they have an “Other People Matter” mindset.

Advanced Academics Program Information

Please join us for an AAP Parent Information Session on Wednesday, September 25th at Bailey’s Primary (6111 Knollwood Drive) at either 9:15 am or 5:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. There will be Spanish translation services at both meetings. Additionally, please see the Fall AAP Newsletter for further information. 

Lunch with your Student

Starting September 30th, parents/guardians are welcome to come eat lunch with their child during their lunch block. If you are interested in joining your child one day during their lunch, please follow the process below. 

• Reach out to your child’s teacher to confirm their lunch time
• Please do your best to notify your child’s teacher and our front office that you plan to come join your child for lunch ___ date. (the day before would be ideal)
• When you arrive, you will come do door #1, sign-in and get a visitor badge – please be prepared to show ID.
• When your child’s lunch starts you will head to the cafeteria to meet them
• You will eat with your child in the cafeteria at a table/area (blue counters) that is away from the other classes and students.
• We ask that you do not bring in treats to share with the other students

Parent Access to FLE Program Materials

The All Parent Schoology Course will have:

• Lessons and media with streaming rights
• Lessons used for students who are opted out of FLE instruction

Parents/guardians will need their parent SIS account to access Schoology (not their child’s)

SEL Screener Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students. 

After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office. 

Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

• Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
• Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
• Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
• Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
• A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
• Alcohol or drug use.
• Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family. 
• Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact one of the members from our mental health team to discuss your concerns and identify resources. FCPS se compromete a apoyar el bienestar mental de todos los estudiantes. El evaluador de aprendizaje socioemocional (SEL) ayuda a nuestros estudiantes a compartir sus perspectivas sobre cómo sus escuelas y comunidades los apoyan y los ayudan a desarrollar las habilidades que necesitan para tener éxito.

La evaluación se ofrece a todos los estudiantes en los grados 3 a 12 en el otoño y la primavera. Bailey’s Upper Families, 

The crisp and cool mornings remind us that fall is coming 🍂🍁. While the mornings are chilly, the afternoons are still quite warm, please encourage your child to dress in layers as they get hot and sweaty outside at recess with all that fun they are having!

Early Release Monday

Thank you for working with us as we create this opportunity for our teachers to get additional planning and training. This allows them to be even better prepared and trained to work with your children. We do ask for your patience as we work through the logistics of identifying which families need their child to stay at school due to a hardship the early release is creating. If we have not heard from you directly we expect that your child is staying behind. If that is the case it is important to know they will not be doing any instruction. They will be supervised by our Instructional Assistants and Site Based Subs, they will not be with their classroom teacher. Please call the school with any questions.

Back to School Night

We are so excited to invite your family to our upcoming Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 18th. When you arrive we invite you to go to your child’s classroom to meet your child’s teacher, see their classroom, and learn about what the year will be like. You are also invited to stop in our cafeteria to meet and learn about our Arts and Music Programming, Advanced Academics, specials classes, Counseling, and more!

We have very limited parking at Bailey’s Upper and we anticipate running out of parking during Back to School Night. Please do not attempt to park in the lots next door, as they have recently hung signs indicating that they will tow from their lot. We encourage you to use the FCPS shuttle service that picks up at Bailey’s Primary Door #1 and will bring you to Bailey’s Upper and then return following the event.

All Students will be administered the iReady Universal Screener for Reading and Math three times this school year. A Fall, Winter and Spring assessment will be administered. Below are the dates when students will complete the Fall assessments.

The Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS), Early Mathematics Assessment System (EMAS), iReady Mathematics, iReady Reading test serve as the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) universal screening assessments for literacy and mathematics across grades PreK-6. 

• These assessments fulfill requirements under the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA), (VKRP), Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI), and FCPS Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
• The iReady Reading and Mathematics tests also serve as growth measures to support teachers in monitoring students’ development throughout the school year. Through new legislation for SY 2024-25, the iReady Reading and Mathematics tests as an alternative to the Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) in grades 3-6.
• The iReady Passage Reading Fluency (PRF), Developmental Spelling Assessment (DSA), CORE Phonics Survey, and 1-on-1 Math Assessment Map offer diagnostic data to identify specific student needs in planning academic support.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available in Parent Digital Consent. Paper opt-out forms are available from your child’s school. Students receiving special education services and accessing modified curriculum will receive a printed opt-out form for modified FLE lessons. 

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology. Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account. Fairfax City will celebrate National Dance Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, September 21, in Old Town Square (10415 North St., Fairfax, VA 22030). This family-friendly event will showcase different dance groups from the surrounding area, some of whom will provide mini dance lessons after their performances. Per tradition, at the end of the event, everyone is encouraged to learn this year’s routine; so bring your dancing shoes! Mrs. Sorto will be leading the National Dance Day Routine at 2:00pm! Parents must stay with children for the entire event. Participation is optional.

We understand that the multiple school forms caregivers receive during the first weeks of school can feel overwhelming, but each one helps set your child up for a successful school year! If you do not have a SIS ParentVUE account, please contact the front office for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account webpage. 

🩹 Immunization Requirements 

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. 

You may check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to Bailey’s Upper Elementary School front office. 

Alternative immunization documents (below) may also be provided, but they may not be uploaded in ParentVUE:  

• A healthcare provider’s written statement specifying all administered immunizations.
• A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
• A notarized Religious Exemption form objecting to the administration of immunizations due to conflicts with religious tenets or practices.

Families can easily grant permission for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. Parents can opt their child in or out of resources including online educational tools, school counseling services, and tutoring services. Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)

The SR&R document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when logging in to that platform. A printable version of the document with a signature sheet is available on the SR&R webpage. This form should be signed and returned by Monday, September 30.

New Menu Items

🍽️Fueling Student Success: New Food Options Cooked up at FCPS

Students will have more than a dozen new options for lunch and breakfast in school cafeterias starting this week. New menu items were either favorites at last year’s food show — including Korean BBQ wings, sweet Thai chili wings, chicken tikka masala, and barbacoa street tacos — or were tested with student focus groups and tastings.

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

Los estudiantes tendrán más de una docena de nuevas opciones para el almuerzo y el desayuno en las cafeterías escolares a partir de esta semana. Los nuevos elementos del menú eran favoritos en show gastronómico del año pasado – incluyendo alitas BBQ coreanas, alitas dulces con chile tailandés, pollo tikka masala y tacos callejeros de barbacoa – o fueron probados con grupos focales de estudiantes y degustaciones.

Asistencia ¿Cuándo debe quedarse mi hijo en casa?
